Excel’s moral focus curriculum emphasizes nine virtues that derive from the Greek Cardinal Virtues, namely: wisdom, respect, gratitude, self control, perseverance, courage, compassion, encouragement, and integrity. Each month one virtue is studied in depth. Students begin by learning not only a definition for the virtue they are studying, but characteristics and components as well. Moral Focus training is then imbedded in classroom learning. In history, they will learn about heroes of virtue. In literature, they will read stories of virtue. In personal interactions and classroom behavior, they will be recognized for displaying that month’s virtue.
At the end of each month there is a moral focus award assembly. Students share what they have learned about the virtue of the month and are recognized for excellent behavior with Moral Focus Awards presented by our principal. Students are applauded for making wise choices and for being courageous and compassionate. Virtue is valued here at Excel.
